About the CAND

Incorporated in 1955 the CAND’s membership consists of over
2,400 Canadian naturopathic doctors and naturopathic medical students.

The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) is the national non-profit professional association representing regulated (or, in unregulated jurisdictions, those who meet the criteria for regulation) naturopathic doctors. Incorporated in 1955 the CAND’s membership consists of over 2,900 Canadian naturopathic doctors and naturopathic medical students. All are graduates of, or students in, an accredited four-year, post-graduate level, naturopathic medical program.

The CAND advocates on behalf of the naturopathic profession federally, supports scientific research as well as the regulation of all health-care professionals to ensure public safety. The Association educates people about the training and education of naturopathic doctors and promotes the benefits of naturopathic medicine to the public, corporations, insurance companies and the federal government.

The CAND has three standing Committees: the Government Relations Committee, the Naturopathic Medicine Week Committee and the Health Fusion (biennial conference) Committee.

The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors
is a recognized stakeholder with the federal government.

Major areas of political focus include:

  • Participating in consultations and on expert advisory committees and review panels providing an active voice for the integration of naturopathic care into the Canadian health care system.
  • Advocating for regulatory changes at the federal level to ensure inclusion of naturopathic doctors in relevant legislation and  the quality and availability of natural health and other products for effective patient treatment.
  • Championing the benefits and cost-effectiveness of naturopathic medicine.
  • Supporting the regulation of naturopathic medicine and naturopathic doctors across Canada.
  • Encouraging federal government funding for naturopathic medical research.

Our recent political success

The CAND was successful in obtaining an exemption of the GST/HST on the services provided to patients by naturopathic doctors under the Excise Tax Act.
